Belt Damage

Greetings!

I just purchased a theft recovery 99 Savage with minor damage. All of the problems I've been able to fix with the help of this page, now I'm tring to find what has / is causing my belt damage.

The left side of the belt is chewed up at about a 45 degree angle from the edge to about 5mm into the belt. There is sufficient belt on the edge (~2 mm) to keep it aligned without problems. I do beleive the belt is safe for now, but I'll be looking at replacing it shortly.

I removed the pulley cover (but have not removed the rear cover) to check for what caused the damage, and I can not see any obivous signs - no wear marks, no shiny spots, etc... On the rear wheel there is some *minor* surface damage, with the scrapes in the metal less than 2mm deep.

I am hopeful the problem was caused by a rock stuck behind the pulley cover, but I'm looking for other items to check. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Eric
